The Supernova collection, launched earlier this year, marked a new chapter for the British brand Bremont. This collection of watches is a bold, integrated sports chronograph, inspired by spacecraft engineering and destined to be the first watch to remain permanently on the moon. Bremont continues its focus on the stars, with this limited edition Supernova Hawking, based on the Supernova chronograph, paying homage to physicist Professor Stephen Hawking's pioneering contributions to black hole research. Richard Mille has always been committed to creating sports watches capable of withstanding the intense impacts of tennis swings or golf ball shots. Professional cycling, however, presents a completely different physical challenge to mechanical movements: continuous high-frequency vibrations are transmitted directly from the road to the handlebars, ultimately affecting the rider's wrist. This environmental factor dictates that the movement design must focus entirely on structural stiffness and shock absorption, rather than simply lightweighting.
Unlike previous products that heavily borrowed from automotive technology, the RM 64-01 employs a symmetrical layout designed to mimic a bicycle drivetrain. The gear train establishes a direct linear relationship between the power source and the adjustment mechanism. Colnago's Master frame, introduced in the 1980s, used star-shaped tubing, increasing the surface area and stiffness of the steel without increasing wall thickness or overall weight. The RM 64-01's external dimensions are: case width 43.21 mm, lug spacing 49.94 mm, and thickness 14.23 mm. The three-layer tonneau-shaped case is primarily made of white quartz TPT (thin-layer technology). This composite material is made of parallel-arranged silica fibers. Each layer is no more than 45 microns thick, impregnated with white resin, and woven on a specialized machine that changes the weft direction by 45 degrees between layers. After assembly, it is heated to 120 degrees Celsius at 6 bar in an autoclave and then machined. This special process creates a material with an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio, completely unaffected by UV radiation, and resistant to the minor scratches that ordinary stainless steel or gold would easily bear.
The bezel is inlaid with sky-blue quartz TPT, a patented formula developed specifically for this watch. Compared to commercially available Grade 2 titanium, the addition of aluminum and vanadium significantly enhances the metal's physical hardness and thermal stability.
